A difficult Conversation- almost all of us have had to have a conversation with someone we have never been comfortable with. Whether it’s your personal life or your professional life, some conversations are too important to be ignored or skipped. This may include the time we have had to bring up the subject to someone else, to talk about something of serious concern, to talk about something that needs to be changed, or to talk about something that has gone wrong. When you are not comfortable with the idea of having a conversation with someone, it will take up space in your mind and distract you from focusing on other important things. So, how can we have a difficult conversation in the right way to ensure that we can get the most out of our conversation:

difficult conversation is inevitable at the workplace. Here are a few tips and ideas to master every stage of a tough conversation.

Tips for handling a difficult conversation

Managing Difficult Conversation -

  • Be prepared
  • Be direct and to the point
  • Eye-level
  • Tone
  • Be empathetic

5 steps to help you handle a difficult conversation

Be prepared :

Before entering into handling a difficult conversation, prepare yourself. Plan what you will talk about and how you will talk about it. Also, plan how you will talk to the person concerned and how you will start a conversation. Have a beginning, a body, and an end in mind! Proper preparation prevents you from poor performance.

Be direct and to the point :

Although we have to manage difficult conversations, hitting the jungle is not a good idea. This is also no time to be wishy-washy or to yield to another's opinion. Therefore, be as specific as possible and reach a point where you can avoid damaging the conversation and achieve the intended outcome. So, it is important to be concise while talking and not compromise the completeness of the message.

Eye-level:

Try to maintain a consistent level of eye contact during the discussion to avoid one person “up” or “below” another. Keeping that level of focus will help you to develop good body language and someone else will get your points better. So, maintaining regular eye contact is important while having a difficult conversation.

Tone:

Make sure you speak as calmly as possible with a sincere voice. This will ensure that someone else listens to the content of your message rather than just focusing on your emotions. Also, avoid pointing fingers, yelling, swearing, etc., because that will make the other person feel like you are being taught or put down and will make them not listen to your message.

Be empathetic:

While you should be straightforward and accurate in delivering your message, you should also be sensitive to the other person. Try putting them in their shoes and think about how they must feel while you talk to them. Give yourself plenty of time to reflect on them and remember them. Also, answer their questions about what, why, when, and if they are patient.

The next time you are supposed to have a difficult conversation at work, at home, or any other place, keep the above points in your mind to make the conversation a little easy on yourself as well as the other person and to make sure your conversation is productive and well received.
