A group of words with similar grammatical properties are called a part of speech which generally plays a similar role in the grammatical structure of the sentences. Moreover, a part of speech explains how words are to be used in a sentence. They also help you in constructing good and grammatically correct sentences. English Grammar has 8 distinct parts of speech namely: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.

Let’s go into a little bit of detail:

 

1. Noun – A noun is a word for a person, place, thing or idea. They can be the subject or the object of the sentence.

Examples of nouns: Shikha, London, Pen, Happiness, etc.

Example sentences:

Shikha lives in Mumbai.

Varun is using color pens to draw

 

2. Pronoun – To avoid repetitions in a sentence, we use pronouns instead of nouns.

Examples of Pronoun: I, You, She, He, Them, They, This, etc.

Example sentence:

She is the tallest girl in the class.

Where are they going?

 

3. Verb – A verb expresses an action or state of being. It essentially shows what someone is doing or the state of things.

Examples of Verbs: Run, Eat, Play, Write, Sing, Can, Must, etc

Example sentences:

I like to play the guitar.

Let’s go for a run in the park.

 

4. Adjective – An adjective modifies a noun. It gives attributes to a noun, provides more information about the noun/pronoun and describes it.

Examples of Adjectives: Red, Young, Happy, Small,etc.

Example sentences:

Komal bought a pink hat.

Twinkle has red hair.

 

5. Adverb- An Adverb, modifies or describes a verb, adjective or another adverb. They provide more information regarding the extent of the situation.

Examples of Adverbs: Slowly, quietly, tomorrow, never, too, etc.

Examples sentences:

I will return this book to you tomorrow.

Peter never lies.

 

6. Preposition – A preposition is used to link a noun or a pronoun with another word.

Examples of Prepositions: At, On, In, Between, Either …. or, etc

Example Sentences:

I left my book on the dining table for you.

Please keep the water bottles in the refrigerator

 

7. Conjunction – Conjunctions are words used to connect words, sentences and phrases together.

Examples of Conjunction: And, Or, But, Because, etc.

Example Sentences:

Go to the supermarket and buy some clothes.

You have to study all night if you want to pass the test.

 

8. Interjection – Interjections are words that are used to express a feeling or emotions.

Examples of Interjections: Alas! oops, Hurray, etc.

Example Sentences:

Alas! He is no more.

Ouch! That hurts.

 

However, some words can be a part of more than one part of speech depending on their usage in the sentence.

The parts of speech is one of the most fundamental concepts of grammar that you will come across while studying grammar. There are 8 parts to it and each one of them is equally important. Hence, keep their definitions and usage in mind to frame grammatically correct sentences.
